Hey Everyone!
This was a really good Easter week! There was lots of stuff that happened so I'll start at the beginning.
First, we had a funeral on Tuesday. A member here died on Sunday morning which was sad, but also good because she's been suffering from cancer for years now. Her husband is super cool and we went to support him at her funeral. It was really sad but also cool that she died right before Easter when everything is about the resurrection. A weird thing about it though was the meal that happened after the funeral. Every year, for the 40 days before Easter, the country of Romania has a fast. The fast means that you can't eat meat, eggs, and certain other things I'm not sure what specifically. But because the member's children are all still Orthodox, the meal we had after the funeral had no meat, eggs, etc. and it wasn't very good because the food they served usually has meat, eggs, etc. Ha so we had sarmale (meat stuffed cabbage rolls) which are usually super good, but stuffed with rice, which is not so good. Just a funny experience.
Also this week Elder B...'s mom and sister decided to be baptized! They wanted to be baptized next week but they haven't learned hardly anything about the gospel yet and they need time to prepare so we set a goal with them for the 5th of May for them both to be baptized. Also, V..., C...'s wife, will probably have a baptismal date soon as well. She was telling Elder B...'s mom and sister to get baptized and she's really cool. We didn't have much progress getting any other investigators this week because of Easter, but this coming week we have a big long list of people that wanted to be visited after Easter. So it should be a good week.
And then for the main event of the week, Easter! Saturday night we went to the "Înviere", which is an Orthodox ceremony held at midnight between Saturday and Sunday. Supposedly a fire lights from heaven in Jerusalem in an Orthodox church and then the fire is carried to all Orthodox churches, then at midnight the priests pass the fire to all of the people who come to the înviere. We went with some members and lit our candles and watched. We were right up in front near the priests and there were probably 1000-ish people in the square around the church. There are lots of people at every church, but we had a LOT there haha.
On Sunday we had church for 2 hours (1 hour 15 minutes of Sacrament meeting, and a half hour of testimony meeting for Sunday school). Afterward we ate cozonac (a kind of bread) that Romanians eat at Easter. V... brought 60 eggs painted red (Romanians paint all of their eggs red and a few green sometimes) and knocked them together. The idea is to break everyone else's eggs with your egg lasting the longest. M..., one of the members here, won with his egg breaking 20 other eggs in a row.
I hope all of you have a good week! Love you all!
With Love, Elder Michael Abbott
Lalelele le leg.
